One of my favorite memories of Daisy goes all the way back to when she called me one September morning. It was one of those Indian summer days where the sun is out and the air is crisp and you know that the summer will soon be making way for fall. Daisy asked if I would like to drive with her, and another friend, to the Maryland coast. Why Maryland? Daisy replied that Maryland was known for its locally caught steamed crabs. She was always curious to try different cuisines and she thought it would be fun to find a waterfront restaurant where we could enjoy dining on a basket full of freshly caught Maryland crabs. Maryland’s coastal restaurants were known for the their unusual serving style which was basically dumping an entire basket of steamed crabs onto a table covered in newspaper. Diners are given both a hammer to crack open the crabs and a large bib to protect their clothing. Daisy’s enthusiasm for expanding her culinary experiences was enticing. Why not go? According to Daisy, Maryland wasn’t that far, 2 - 3 hours tops and we would be home before dark. I had nothing else planned for that day. And besides what better way to say good-bye to summer. And a day with Daisy was always fun.
Daisy’s sense of adventure was contagious. So, the three of us set off to Maryland in Daisy’s big-ass station wagon. I can still remember the gear shift on the steering column. The driving was to be divided between the three of us. Somehow I was nominated to drive first. Little did I know that I would also be the only one driving that day. And little did I know just how long a trip it would be. Now this adventure was in the way back days of no cell phones and no GPS devices. Daisy was the mapless front-seat navigator. Our friend, who had the back seat all to herself, and whose only task was to sit back and enjoy the scenery, complained endlessly of motion sickness. So, she decided she was best off lying across the seat and closing her eyes for awhile. Well, that left Daisy and me to talk about this, to talk about that, and to talk about this again.
Before we knew it, several hours had passed. The sky told us it was now late afternoon. Apparently we missed the “Welcome to Maryland” signs and we were nowhere near coastal anything. That is when we decided to pull into a police station and get some recommendations and directions. Of course we didn’t write down the directions because they seemed so straight forward. Needless to say we were once again, dare I say, lost. But like pioneers on a wagon train we kept going and soon found that we were now approaching the Verrazano Bridge in Maryland. Yes, there is another Verrazano Bridge. But this was a long, long bridge over Sinepuxent Bay that connects Assateague Island to the Maryland mainland. Did we put on the brakes and attempt a U-turn? No, the scenery was too beautiful. Daisy, the forever adventurer, just treated this travel faux pas as another fork in the road. Our friend in the back seat finally woke up and wanted to know “Are we there yet?” Assateague Island is partially in Maryland and partially in Virginia. Of course, after driving so far, we explored both areas. We were even lucky enough to spot some of the famous wild horses that inhabit both the Maryland and Virginia sections of the island.
With the sun fading and our stomachs grumbling, we drove into Chincoteague Island which is the Virginia section of the island. We were sure that the crabs in Virginia were just as good as the crabs in Maryland, maybe even better. The small town was mostly deserted. We were finally able to find an open restaurant and we were its only customers. Our waitress told us that most of the town’s businesses were closed because tourist season was over and it was Sunday. The next snafu was when we ordered a bushel of steamed crabs only to be told that crab season was over. But the Universe was shining on us that day. After telling the waitress of our traveling travails and our journey for steamed crabs, the chef was able to scramble together the last dozen. That left lots more room for dessert. As the crabs were dumped onto our table, we toasted each other with a glass of wine and then proceeded to hammer and devour the best tasting crabs ever. While I have had many adventures with Daisy over the years, the memory of sharing that day with Daisy is one that I will never forget. I laugh about it still. Thanks for asking me Daisy. You’ll always live in my heart. Your friend, Pam.
