HENRY “HANK” ROSENBERG
Celebrating Your Life.
First, my sincere condolences go out to the family.
My heart is definitely there with you.
On March 23rd, 2005, My Mom passed away, 8 years later on the same exact date, My Dad passed away, My Dad's brother passed away on that date and most recently, Henry passed away on March 23rd.
I can’t believe I knew him for half a century.
Henry was a special, unique person, intelligent, a great reader, a poet, great to have deep conversations with and very loyal.
I know his whole family and they are all terrific: Sam, Cynthia, Steve, and Jeff.
I’d like to share some memories with all of you.
Is it live or is it Memorex?
Rewind the Memorex tape! We’re going to the way-back machine.
Circa 1970’s
In 1970, on East 28th Street I met him as Egglox, a long-haired hippie- decked out in ripped
bell bottom dungarees!
Back then pretty girls were chicks, things were groovy, far out, dynamite!
Do ya dig it?
It was the flower child days. Peace and Love and Rock ‘n Roll.
Sometimes we were uptight, other times mellow.
And he dug it when I still referred to him as Egglox, because there were few left who knew him when.
And Egglox, he will always be to me, even though he had long since cut his hair.
Back in 1973, we took a trip to Quebec, Montreal, and Toronto. He did all the driving and it was
a 12 hour haul. We virtually did it straight, save a couple of restroom stops. What a ROAD WARRIOR—he was. We took his best friend, Ninja, with us. I remember we had to bring special dog papers for him. This was a first, watching The Customs Officer check Ninja’s papers as we crossed the border. Before, Ninja, of course, I also knew Bullmoose who by the way, once bit me. We also visited his friend Richie in Toronto.

When the trip was over and we got back to NY, we scrambled to be on time for dinner at
The Brassiere. And Sam was always so kind and generous taking us out for a family dinner in the city.
Many a time, Sam treated us to a delicious dinner at Peter Luger’s in Williamsburg, Brooklyn to celebrate the occasion of the day. I can still taste their famous Beefsteak Tomatoes and Vidalia Onion Salad with their Special Steak Sauce Dressing. Always delicious!
Cynthia was very special. We had a good relationship. She was classy, sharp and with it, and very stylish. To this day, I always remember her birthday and sent Henry wishes for her up until this year. She crossed the generation gap and always had profound things to say. And I’d pass along yearly wishes to "Uncle Sam” as I refer to him- because his birthday is July 4th.
And speaking of birthdays, Henry and I always celebrated back to back and that was special-
July 7th and July 8th. In addition to Henry, me, and Sam, Meredith is a July baby too.
You know that July Babies Rock.
We visited Jimmy Seelandt’s place with horses in Demascus, Pennsylvania on the Delaware River many times. It was a beautiful getaway.
I believe Henry told me he took you there, Danielle and Meredith. Is that right?
He told me many times that he was so proud of you both. You were his light.
In the area, we went down Skinners Falls in a round rubber tube. Ninja and I were in the tube and Henry and Jimmy S. were with us. It was the place to cool off on a hot summer’s day!
And cool off we did—more than we bargained for, as down the rapids we went and then down into the river we tumbled, as the tube flipped over, splashing into the river! Henry grabbed for me and Jimmy grabbed Ninja and swam us back to safety. Memorable Moments!
Ya gotta love the Delaware River!
Henry’s brothers, Steve and Jeff are great. Even though we hadn’t spoken in years it didn’t matter. When I spoke to them the other day, we could just catch up and chat.
And don’t you love how Henry had nicknames for his buddies! Somehow first names got changed or eliminated entirely.
Stugotz and Russo, Seelandt and Fox.
Hanging out with Russo (Jimi) and Lorrie with the extra -long beautiful hair was always fun. Sometimes, going out for dinner at Wheatley Hills Tavern in Westbury or for a late night dinner at The Midwood Bar and Grill in Brooklyn with yummy Italian food or hanging out at Jimi’s cottage in Westbury, listening to Jimi Hendrix (lots of Jimis) , The Doors, yet another Jim, Jim Morrison… or watching a movie.
Egglox and Jimi decided to drive cross country in the summer of 1974. Lorrie and I wanted to take a trip too. Contemplating whether to drive to California in what was her yellow Karmann Ghia, we decided to fly out west. We met the guys in San Francisco, drove up North to a scenic beach with coves in the cold Pacific, even in the summer. Then we all drove south on Highway 1 with the most spectacular views. And we also went to Big Sur with other amazing stops along the way. We also dined at the famous House of Prime Ribs on Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco.
Then, Lorri and I headed to Las Vegas and when we got back to New York, we couldn’t believe the guys were still on the road.
Henry and I would listen to the Night Bird, Alison Steele on WNEW-FM Radio. As Scott Muni, (who sounded like he gargled with Ajax) would say—The Place Where Rock Lives.
We once called her and asked her to pay tribute to Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin as the King and Queen of Rock ‘n Roll.
So many concerts: The Fillmore East, The Wollman Skating Rink Central Park…
The family and friends would often get together at the Rosenberg home on East 28th Street
(I believe it was 922 East 28th Street) in good ol’ Brooklyn. Or we’d go there for a July barbecue in the backyard with the next-door neighbors from the band Alive and Kicking.
I lived 6 blocks away also on East 28th Street and we’d often take that walk back and forth.
Egglox
I understood him and he always appreciated that. We understood each other. A long time friend. I knew I could always count on him if I ever needed anything--24/7. I could call anytime and vice versa. And that meant a lot. That is part of what made him special and I will always treasure that. Didn’t matter if long periods of time passed. We just picked up where we left off, without missing a beat.
People go in other directions and that’s OK but the caring and friendship always lasted.
Having met as teenagers, I remember him saying to me, “Did you ever think we’d get this old?
Sometimes, we’d recite the Moody Blue lyrics by heart:
Breathe deep the gathering gloom.
Watch lights fade from every room…
Cold hearted orb that rules the night,
Removes the colors from our sight,
Red is gray and yellow white,
But we decide which is right
And which is an illusion.
It won’t be the same without you Henry. We all love you and care about you and a big piece of you certainly remains with us.
Whether it was Smello
or
What’s Smellin’ Ya?
or
Hal-aran-a -daze.
You definitely were an original.
As only Henry would say in Japanese:
On say tek nee ama you meh!
SWEET DREAMS EGGLOX!
