Phyllis Downs

Obituary of Phyllis Ann Downs

Our family lost a shining light on December 16, 2021 when Phyllis Downs, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed peacefully at Mt. Sinai South Nassau Hospital. Phyllis, daughter of Rose and Victor Macchiarolo, was born on March 20, 1943 in Gulfport, Mississippi when her father was stationed at a local military base. Upon completion of service, the family returned to Whitestone, NY where Phyllis grew up, alongside twin sister, Angela. On June 29, 1963, Phyllis married Frederick Downs. The couple ultimately settled in Bayside, NY where they reared two daughters, Laura and Kimberly. Phyllis was an outstanding and dedicated mother, always ready with a ride, an after-school snack, or soothing words to dry up tears. Her cooking was second to none – if a better chicken saltimbocca exists somewhere in this world, we’d like to taste it. It was always a treat to have a meal from Phyllis’s kitchen or attend a party at her house. She welcomed each of her six grandchildren with unparalleled affection, delighting in every achievement from wobbly first steps to proud graduations. She also loved to feed them – lots and lots of food. Phyllis enjoyed travel. She and Fred took numerous trips to Vegas, Jamaica, Florida and saw the world through their many (many!) cruises. Summer vacations at the Bethany Beach house with the whole gang were especially magical – good setting, good food, lots of laughs and memories to last a lifetime. Phyllis was taken from us way too soon, but we find solace in knowing she is at peace. She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Fred, her two daughters, Laura and Kimberly, her sister, Angela, and her six grandchildren, Brendan, Matthew, Emily, Shannon, Grace and Connor. Phyllis will always be in our hearts.
