Marilyn Ann Hangen March 19, 1944 - June 14, 2023 Marilyn A. Hangen, a dedicated and beloved educator, passed away on June 14, 2023, at the age of 79 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on March 19, 1944, Marilyn pursued her lifelong dream of becoming a teacher after graduating from Hofstra University in 1967. Throughout her career, she demonstrated unwavering dedication and passion, earning a stellar reputation for her commitment to her students' success. Marilyn's impact extended far beyond the classroom. She tirelessly worked to improve the lives of her students and their families, organizing programs, providing essential support, and fostering an environment of care and support. Her compassion knew no bounds as she went above and beyond to make a positive difference. In 1992, Marilyn became an Assistant Principal in Uniondale, where she continued to excel in her role, earning the respect and admiration of parents, children, and teachers alike. She introduced innovative academic and social programs and co-authored the school's Blue Ribbon application, leading to the school's recognition as a New York State School of Excellence in 1994. In 1996, Marilyn was appointed principal of the Smith Street School in Uniondale. Her unwavering dedication to student achievement and well-being fueled her drive to create a positive and productive learning environment. She devoted long hours to the school, organizing parent-child night events, parent workshops, and community initiatives, fostering an overall friendly environment. Marilyn was known for her honesty, genuine nature, and high standards for her students, staff, and herself. Her students took delight in her personal connections, as she knew each of their names and shared daily hugs. They were amazed by her skills in skating, dancing, and even walking on stilts. One of Marilyn's favorite quotes, which she lived by in her relationships with students, was, "Kids don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care!" Her genuine care and concern for her students were evident in every interaction. Marilyn A. Hangen will be remembered for her compassion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the success and well-being of her students. Her legacy of creating a nurturing and engaging learning environment will continue to inspire generations to come. She is survived by her brother, Douglas K. Edgar, her son Devin Hangen, and her daughter Carrie Hangen, as well as the countless lives she touched throughout her remarkable journey.
