Rose Canning-Murphy

Obituary of Rose A. Canning-Murphy

Murphy - Rose A. Canning-Murphy of Merrick, NY died peacefully at home with her family beside her on January 6, 2016. With courage and grace she fought a long battle of 13 years with cancer. Rosie as she was affectionately known was born on Nov. 22nd,1953 to James and Rose Canning of Richmond Hill,Queens. Although she was the seventh of twelve children she was a 'big' sis to all her siblings. A graduate of NYIT, Rosie was a quick learner and excelled in researching many topics, including faith and spirituality, political and financial interests and health related issues. She was a strong advocate for taking personal charge of your health and spiritual needs with education and commitment to personal and spiritual growth. Her siblings continually reminded her that she also excelled in choosing a great husband when she married Michael R. Murphy, of the Port Authority Police Department on August 21,1987. They were blessed with two children, Erin and Mikey. Together they enjoyed their children, including Erin's sunshine personality and Mikey's musical talents and pursuit of a law degree. Rose Ann was a great cook and opened her heart and home to family, friends and those in need. Holidays were particularly special and enjoyed by many at the Murphy's home. She will be remembered for her generosity and concern for others. Her faith was paramount to Rosie. Daily prayers, Rosaries and Pilgrimages were her way of life. Evidence of her faith was obvious in the last minutes of life when her face was radiant with peace and trust as she met Our Savior face to face. Close to her heart for over 21 years was her commitment to her parish, Cure of Ars R.C. Church in Merrick. For that reason the family welcomes donations to the St.John Vianney Cure of Ars Church Restoration Fund. Rosie was predeceased by brothers Bernard and James Canning and sisters Loretta Canning, Geraldine Mutarelli and brother-in-law John Murphy. She is survived by brothers Anthony (Marianne), Timothy (Shannon) and Joseph (Gay); and sisters Mary Wolfe, Pat Canning, Bernadette (Al) Daniels, and Eileen(Joseph) Frazzetta, and 'bonus' sister Paula (Billy) Nelson and numerous in-laws. She will be dearly missed by many nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation will be held for two days at CS Bartholomew & Son Funeral Home, 302 Bedford Avenue, Bellmore. Visitation days are: Saturday and Sunday 2:00-4:00PM and 7:00-9:30PM. Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, January 11, 2016 at 10:00 AM at St. John Vianney Cure of Ars RC Church, 2323 Merrick Avenue, NY,11566. Following the church service Rose Ann will be laid to rest at The Cemetery of The Holy Rood (Cross), 111 Old Country Road, Westbury, NY.
