Obituary of Michael Gilmartin

Michael J. Gilmartin, born December 30, 1950, died May 17, 2016 of heart failure. Founder of the Gilmartin Studio, he was a highly respected woodworker and furniture designer in Atlanta, GA. for nearly 40 years. Known for the award winning "Gilmartin Chair," his works are in the permanent collection of numerous museums including the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the High Museum of Art; he was exhibited nationally and is in prized private collections. A native New Yorker, Michael was a graduate of Chaminade, Binghamton Univ.,SUNY Buffalo, where he received his MBA, and Penland School of Crafts. A Member of a large, gregarious New York family, Michael was predeceased by his father James. He leaves his mother Adelaide; sisters Christine Cavanaugh (Tom), Eileen Gilmartin (David Lavallee), and Dorothy Acquino (Dominick); his brothers Bob, and Jim (Ann); and many nephews, nieces, and grand nephews and nieces; and a host of deeply close friends, colleagues and clients. Reposing Monday 2-4 & 7-9:30pm at C.S.Bartholomew & Son Funeral Home. Funeral Mass Tuesday 10:45am at St. Barnabas R.C.Church. Interment St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY.
